Financial Controller

Job description

We’re recruiting a Financial Controller for a fast-paced retail/ecommerce business based in Bradford. Reporting to the Finance Director, this role will oversee daily financial operations, drive process improvements, enhance internal controls, and deliver commercial insight to senior leadership. This is a broad, hands-on position—well suited to someone eager to make a real impact within a dynamic, mid-sized retail environment.

 

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Oversee the preparation of monthly management accounts, board packs, and cash flow forecasts

  • Deliver accurate, timely financial reporting to support strategic and operational decision-making

  • Partner with business units to enhance performance visibility, identify risks, and provide commercial insight

  • Drive improvements in financial systems, processes, and reporting, including working around legacy system constraints using tools like Excel and Power Query

  • Manage VAT, duty compliance, multi-currency accounting, and contractual invoicing

  • Coordinate year-end processes and lead external audit preparation and delivery

  • Monitor stock movements and investigate discrepancies in collaboration with the stock control team

  • Prepare detailed budgets by product, region, and cost centre, and report on variances

  • Strengthen internal controls and ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations

  • Support the development and upskilling of the finance team

 

Ideally you will be able to demonstrate the below qualifications/experience:

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA)

  • Proven experience as a Financial Controller or similar senior finance role, ideally within a retail or ecommerce environment

  • Strong understanding of retail finance operations, including stock, VAT/duty, and multi-channel sales

  • Commercially minded with the ability to partner effectively across departments

  • Advanced Excel skills (Power Query experience desirable)

  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills

  • Hands-on, proactive approach with a continuous improvement mindset
