‘Hiring a Temp’

Temporary employees make a huge difference to a business. Whether you are looking to cover a period of absence, need an extra pair of hands during a busy trading period or require additional support for a particular project, the flexibility and niche skill set offered by a non-permanent member of staff can be invaluable.

Time is often of the essence when it comes to recruitment. Temporary employees are likely to be ready and available for work almost immediately, meaning that you are able to have a new highly skilled and experienced member of the team in place within a matter of days of identifying a particular need.

New employees give a boost to existing members of staff; they come with fresh ideas and can offer an alternative perspective which can be hugely motivational to the rest of the workforce. They often possess specialised skills which match a particular requirement that currently exists within an organisation – as well as delivering within their role, they are sharing their experience which benefits and expands the knowledge of others.

A major advantage is the flexibility that they offer which eliminates the need for an organisation to appoint a permanent member of staff where there may not be a longer term requirement. They also provide companies with an option to have somebody in place whilst waiting for a permanent appointment to join them – particularly if they are seeing out a long notice period with their current employer – to ensure there is no loss of productivity to the business.

In the right circumstances, temporary employees can become permanent members of staff; as an employer you have an excellent insight into a person’s performance and the employee is familiar with the role and requirements.

However, it is not recommended to bring somebody in on a temporary basis to ‘try them out’ when you key objective is to secure someone for a permanent position – and remember, people have different reasons for working in non-permanent roles and may not wish to pursue something longer term.

It is important that when you do need to recruit a temporary member of staff that you approach an experienced recruitment expert within your required discipline who can help you find the right solution.
