What is it like to work in recruitment?
When Marie Williams joined the Sheffield office of financial specialists Sharp Consultancy in the summer, it was her first taste of a career in recruitment. Here she looks back on those first few months and how she is thriving in a role where there’s “never a dull moment”.
“I graduated from Sheffield Hallam University having studied Business and HR Management and wanted to do something which would enable me to utilise the knowledge I had gained from my degree with my previous experience of working with the long term unemployed and helping them write CVs and offering advice on job applications and preparing for interviews.
“I had been particularly interested in the modules which covered how organisations can recruit the right individuals to match the needs of their business and was keen to put this insight into practice; the opportunity to work within an established and well-regarded recruitment consultancy was the perfect step onto the ladder for me.
“It was important to start my career off on the right foot – I knew that successful recruitment has to be about so much more than just filling a vacancy so I wanted to make sure that I joined somewhere which had a strong focus on identifying the right person for a particular role and offered much more of a consultative approach to its clients and candidates. Sharp has a strong reputation and the fast pace, variety of work and the potential for progression and rewards made it an easy decision for me to join the team.
“My days are incredibly varied; I identify and meet new candidates to discuss what they are looking for from a new role, determine their skills and experience and proactively work with candidates to outline potential employment opportunities. Organisational skills and a keen eye for detail are essential – my role is incredibly busy, from arranging interviews to liaising with clients about candidate CVs, and it is important that I keep everyone updated and ensure that the recruitment process moves along smoothly and efficiently.
“Recruitment is a targeted sector but one thing that I have learnt in my short time at Sharp is that it is not enough to just fill a role – there is a real emphasis here on ensuring client and candidate satisfaction and making a successful match for both parties involved. Sometimes it can take a bit longer to find the right candidate for a position, and whilst time is a key factor in recruitment, it is important to remember that getting best person for the job has to be a priority.
“It’s great to get positive feedback from the people that I have worked with to secure new roles as well as my colleagues. There is a great team spirit and everyone is very supportive of each other which spurs me on to keep challenging myself. For anyone considering a career in recruitment, I can certainly recommend it!”

“Marie made me feel totally at ease when discussing my past work history and the reasons why I felt I was suitable for the job position on offer. Her questioning techniques were really first class.
After questioning and discussing my work skills, she was able to marry them up with the job requirements from the client.
Marie then went on to supply details of what would be expected at the interview stage and gave some tips as to what the questions might be and how to prepare my answers.”
“I met Marie on my interview where I found her to be honest, reliable, hard working, conscientious and courteous. She knew how and when to put the right question to me so I could give her the answer she needed, she explained excellently the details of the job I was applying for and the entire period of the interview she acted like a professional recruiter and of course made me comfortable in the conversation. Before I got to the final interview, she prepared me on how to handle the interview, gave me some tips on how to succeed and advised me on how to dress as a professional person. This is why I would recommend her highly.”
