The desire to improve his long term career options led former retail manager Alex Law to swap the shop floor for the challenge of recruitment. We catch up with Alex to find out how, two years after joining financial recruiters Sharp Consultancy as a trainee, he is now heading up his own team.

“Before joining Sharp Consultancy in 2017, my background was in retail. I had been a store manager for an O2 franchise managing a team of ten and had previously worked in retail management for a number of years. The time had come for me to weigh up my career prospects for the longer term and that was when I made the decision to move into recruitment; I wanted to utilise my sales and management skills but in a field where I would have greater opportunities for progression, personal development and rewards.

“There are a vast number of recruitment consultancies across the region, but for me it was important that the company I looked to join had a strong approach to role development as well as a progression route based upon my own achievements so I could move up the ladder in line with my performance. I was also attracted to the specialist finance offering of Sharp Consultancy and I knew that the vast amount of experience in the sector that the senior management team and directors offered would be hugely beneficial to me.

“Starting a new career whatever the industry is always a challenge and making the move into recruitment was no different.  However, my many years in retail equipped me with a number of transferable skills so I was able to quickly establish myself with clients and candidates and I set about working hard to differentiate what I could offer ahead of our competitors.

“The last couple of years have seen me progress from a trainee consultant to my currently role of Managing Consultant heading up the Transactional team and responsible for the recruitment of all temporary and permanent non-qualified finance roles.  And whilst I have been able to enjoy success in my short time in recruitment so far, I know that because of the forward-thinking nature of the business and the culture within the team, there are still plenty of opportunities for me to further my career.

“What advice would I give to anyone thinking of making the move into recruitment? Look at the skills you have in your current role and how they will be of benefit to a would-be employer. Previous recruitment experience is not always a necessity and there are many attributes from sales based roles which are a valuable asset in this industry. If you are prepared to put the hard work in to make your move a success, you really can very quickly reap the rewards of your efforts.”
