This role represents an excellent opportunity for a qualified or nearly qualified accountant, or an experienced Internal Audit practitioner, to join the strong team at Cumbria’s leading financial institution as Deputy Head of Internal Audit.

Since its foundation in 1850 by over 1000 original members Cumberland Building Society has grown to 34 branches and become an established regional presence across Cumbria, Dumfriesshire, Haltwhistle, Lancaster and Preston. The Cumberland is now one of the most successful building societies in the country and boasted stable rates of growth throughout the recession and subsequent recovery period.

This role has arisen as a result of this sustained growth and the successful applicant will join, and assist in managing, an established team of five internal auditors, reporting into the Head of Internal Audit. The Society is an organisation with strong regional values and makes a conscious effort to reflect these principles at team level. As well as donating £100,000 to support local charitable initiatives last year, the Society gave all employees an extra paid day’s leave for charitable work and in recent years it has implemented a “cycle to work” scheme and operated as a “fair trade” organisation.

As Deputy Head of Internal Audit, you will ensure your team provides assurance to the Board and Executive Management that all of the significant risks that might arise across the Society and its subsidiaries have been identified and are being adequately controlled. You will apply your proven technical skills to identify risks and assess the adequacy and effectiveness of controls. You must be a proven auditor capable of delivering work without significant training or supervision.

This is a key role and will be hands on managing a small team, providing assurance in respect of the risks and controls environment across the business with key responsibilities including, but not being limited to:
*Assessing whether key areas of the business are operating in an effective and efficient manner, adhering to legal and regulatory standards and industry best practice.
*Applying your proven technical skills to assess the design and effectiveness of controls through audit testing.
*Producing audit reports.
*Deputising for the Head of Internal Audit and managing other members of the audit team.

The successful candidate: :
*Will need to be a qualified Accountant with either ACA, CA, MIIA or ACCA Accreditation (or be very close to qualification), or be an experienced Internal Audit practitioner.
*Will need to have a proven track record of running financially focused internal audits.
*Is likely to have come from a financial services background but equally you may have previous experience in commercial or public sector internal audits. (Applications are welcome from candidates with an industry or professional practice background).
*Will need to have experience of working closely with senior stakeholders, demonstrating excellent communication and influencing skills.
